Meatloaf

Ahhhh…….January! Truly the only redeeming thing that I like about January is that it is my best friend’s birthday month and for that reason, and that reason only, I won’t eliminate the month completely from my calendar. (Happy Birthday Kathy Moore!)

Usually January raises its ugly head with cold, bitter temperature, snow and many dark and [Read more…]

Amaretto Fruit

Amaretto Fruit

Traditions! Yes, traditions run deep in our home this time of year. Our family treasures all of our traditions (and yes, some are quirky,) Christmas brings as many traditions to our home as wishes on Santa’s list.

It was a joy to share our Christmas morning tradition this week on the Kansas City Chow Town blog. You will find our tradition of southern style monkey bread. Each Christmas morn for as long as I can remember, we have started this holy day with a breakfast that can be prepared ahead. Amaretto infused citrus, cheese and sausage laden casserole and of course, monkey bread.

A friend shared this Amaretto fruit recipe with me years ago. She is quite a gourmet cook. I thought her comment about this recipe were spot on. She said, “this recipe is so very simple and elegant at the same time.” I added maraschino cherries to entice our daughter to try this recipe and it seemed to work. [Read more…]

Candy Cane Snow Balls

Some days the rhythm of life can be comforting to the soul. When the calendar and the season play a rhythm that sounds something like “same time next year”your heart skips a beat and yes, smiles. Traditions this time of year are the fabric of life. Such is the annual Culinary Cookbook Club cookie exchange.

I’ve written about the cookbook club that I belong to before. We can’t seem to agree how long we have been meeting, but my best guess is going on 20 years. [Read more…]

Lemon Kiss Cookies

It happened just like clock work. The calendar pages blew off my desk with hurricane gust winds. Yep, the days, they are a flying by…..don’t blink.

The holidays for all practical purposes are here. Start getting extra zzzzz’s each night, roll up your sleeves and enjoy the season. If you haven’t had an old fashioned cookie exchange for a while, this is the year.

Read tips on how to host a cookie exchange on the Kansas City Star’s Chow Town Blog. If apricot cookies aren’t you favorite then I would like to suggest your make these luscious Lemon Kiss Cookies. You can get the recipe here.

It would be great fun if you would share your favorite recipe. I always enjoy baking Christmas cookies and I need to begin now! How about you?

Apple Cider Cupcakes

Apple Cider Cupcakes

‘Tis the season and one that I adore–apples, apples and more apples. They are everywhere and seem to be multiplying quickly. The crisp, sweet taste of a red jewel or the sensation of cider on the tip of your tongue produces life long memories.
It was fun to reminiscence about days gone by and share the recipe for Stephenson’s Apple Fritters on the Kansas City Chowtown Blog. Be sure and check out my new favorite spot for delicious cider and cinnamon sugar apple donuts on the Kansas City Chowtown Blog. Once you have cider and apple butter in your stash, I hope you will consider making these Apple Cider Cupcakes. We shared these on our blog before, but they definitely have earned a repeat performance. We have served these sweet morsels at many a public event with rave reviews. [Read more…]
