Midwestern Cobb Salad

Midwestern Cobb Salad

Please tell me it happens to you too! Do you ever get in a salad rut? Where the same ole same ole just won’t fit the bill anymore. Sometimes, the antidote to this problem can be as simple as presentation. Shake it up a bit and go ahead and add more ingredients than you normally would. Take a few extra minutes and fry some bacon. Then present the salad in an artistic manner, set the dinner table and stand back. The ohs and awhs from your family will delight and dinner will be exciting once again. [Read more…]

Fresh Peach Pie

Peach Pie

Summertime conjures up so many fond memories both of activities and food.

You can’t recall past summers and not remember peaches. The rosy, ripe jewels and that juice that drips from your chin to your toes. Awh, yes, when peaches are ripe and at their peak their is no better memory.

My peach memory from the summer of 2014 will be the South Carolina peaches that I enjoyed on the beach last week. We vacationed on Seabrook Island and many days were devoted to beach life. It was a sweet treat to enjoy a peach from my beach chair and not worry about the drippy mess. When I finished enjoying my peach, the ocean beckoned and cleared away any juicy evidence. [Read more…]

Pork Fried Rice

Fried Rice

Ahhhh summer time and the living is easy. Summer has been kind to us so far. Not too many days with extreme heat and yet plenty of heat for the herbs and garden. It still seems a sin to heat up the oven for dinner so we find many of our meals involve the grill. This is great and we enjoy the herb grilled meats and fish. The downside when our family grills is that we always tend to grill too much. Yes, leftovers are good to a point but then you need to repurpose them or “recycle” as my mom would say when I was growing up.

Last week, pork tenderloin was on sale for 5 bucks. [Read more…]

Praline Cookies

Have you ever tried the Praline Cookies in the Cafe at Nordstrom’s? Oh, trust me, you would remember if you had experienced this treasure. My top two picks from the Nordstrom cafe are of course, the Tomato Basil Soup and the Praline Cookie. Picture the Nordstrom cookie—it is the size of a tea cup saucer—huge! You can indulge or share it 4 ways, either way you come out a winner. [Read more…]

Traditional Snack Mix

Snack mix

I like to blog for many reasons, but one reason I enjoy this process is that I love the idea of having many of my favorite recipes in one place. When I want to pull from the tried and true, I can go to the blog and find our family favorites.

Seems like now a days it is almost impossible to find the old, traditional recipes on the internet. Everyone is trying to make a traditional recipe their own and in the process, guess what? We lose tradition. The recipes end up representing some vague rendition of the early classic. Kathy and I feel strongly about food traditions around the table and when entertaining those we love. We want to add new and still enjoy the old.

By the time you are reading this blog, I will be “in the mountains” or “hiking the desert” with about 50 middle school and high school kids. [Read more…]
