Kathy and I continue to pinch ourselves when we think about our whirlwind trip to London. It was spur of the moment and as we already described, we had an incredible time.
We were walking and exploring Notting Hill with our hosts and they suggested we grab lunch at Jamie Oliver’s Recipease Cafe. Well, ok, you don’t really “grab” anything in Europe, but we did stop in and explore this remarkable cooking shop paradise and enjoyed lunch, too. It was one of those lunches that will stay forever in my mind’s scrapbook of food experiences.
I had an avocado sandwich with the following description:
Smashed spicy avocado £6.95V
Avocado, Worcestershire sauce, toasted London bloomer bread & cherry tomatoes.
Add outdoor-reared streaky bacon £7.95
It was the perfect antidote to calm my nerves from travels, presentations and new adventures.
As I have blogged about before, lunch is always a challenge. I decided it was time to recreate that tasty avocado sandwich and since I have discovered the perfect old world bread, it was a snap. No more lunchtime blues.
2 ripe avocados, peeled with seed removed
Worcestershire sauce, to taste
Dash of red pepper flakes
Cherry tomatoes
1 or 2 slices bacon, cooked until crisp, optional
2 slices old world bread, toasted
In a small bowl, mash avocados with Worcestershire sauce. Add red pepper flakes.
Spread onto toasted bread fairly thick. Top with sliced cherry tomatoes or crisp bacon.

Lunch! Just the mention conjures up all kinds of emotions. Always on the look out for new lunch solutions, I was thrilled when I found the Beauty of the Bistro food truck and discovered a solution to most of my Wednesday lunches. Its the perfect anecdote for hump day. Read all about this perfect lunch spot at the blog I wrote for the Kansas City Star’s Kansas City Chow Town site here.
Ok, that solves the Wednesday dilemma but what about the other 6 days? I am oh-so-lucky that my spouse joins me many weekdays for lunch and my daughter attends a university model high school, so she is home for lunch 2 weekdays. [Read more…]

What’s for dinner tonight? If you are from the Midwest like me, beef often takes the center of the plate. (Oh, I can’t help myself—do your remember the music and that famous line from the commercial: “Beef, It’s What for Dinner?”) Just maybe you are ready for some new, quick and easy beef recipes? I cook with the seasons. I serve roasts, stews and chili in the winter and grilled chicken and salad on those warm summer days. Yet, too quickly, boredom sets in and I am tired of the seasonal fare. That happened to me recently and I was craving something different, but the snow covered grill seemed daunting. My solution was this quick and easy sirloin sandwich—with a flavor punch of blue cheese mayo. [Read more…]
